Course Layout

We use the mastery system of education. Besides lecturing, this course provides clinical experience such as: research, case study, group clinical supervision & presentation. Assessment includes case study oral and written presentations, group participation, research paper and assignments.
The topics mentioned above are taught within 3 months. During this period, students will also be given clinical case assignments and presentations to do.
Our course is structured as 2 intensive workshop with 6 group clinical supervision & oral / written case presentation for the assessment. Fulfilling the attendance and passing the criteria given will lead to towards the licensed practitioner membership of Educational Psychology Division of Malaysia Association of Psychotherapy.

Training Topics

The Bangor Dyslexia Test is an internationally validated educational psychometric test coated by Miles from Bangor University, UK. It is conducted for those who might have problems associated with specific learning difficulties or disorder.
Professor Miles found that in his research that dyslexic children and adult suffered from a specific profile of disabilities. This course trains you how to use the Bangor Dyslexia Test to identify dyslexic symptoms which can be used with a clinical interview to assess present dyslxia.

Subtests included
(1) Left-hand (body parts)
This item is administered in order to indicate whether subject is able to differentiate body parts between left and right.
(2) Polysyllables
This item is administered in order to identify whether subject is able to follow the words instructed instead of stumbling over words or getting part of words the wrong way around.
(3) Subtraction
This item is administered in order to determine the subject’s skill or strategies to subtract numbers.
(4) Tables
This item is administered in order to determine subject’s ability on reciting at least three tables. This is because failure at reciting tables is a strong indicator of dyslexia.
(5) Months Forwards
This item is administered in order to determine how familiar the subject is with the order of the months.
(6) Months reversed
This item also is administered in order to determine whether the subject is able to put the order of the months backwards.
(7) Digits Forwards
This item is administered in order to determine whether the subject has any related difficulties, for example, in remembering of telephone numbers or instructions.
(8) Digits Reversed
This item is administered in order to determine whether subject is able to put high concentration to say the digits backwards.
(9) b-d Confusion
This item is asked to see if there is any evidence that the subject confuses b and d.
(10) Familial Incidence
This item is administered in order to determine whether there is any evidence of anyone else in the family having similar difficulties.

Dr. Chan has a 15 years clinical experience as a psychologist, child and family therapist in Malaysia, Asia and Europe.
Dr. Edward Chan gained his degree in psychology from Middlesex University, UK., his Masters degree in Learning from the University of Lancaster, UK., and his Doctorate in Psychology from the Intercultural Open University , the Netherlands. Dr. Chan spent 3 years at the Dept. of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford and the Open University, UK to conduct the research for his doctorate work.
Dr. Edward received further postgraduate training on numerous psychotherapy discipline from leading psychologists and psychotherapists in the field.
Dr. Chan has also published widely, including in the academic proceedings in the various international and national conferences he has been invited to speak, including, Current Research & Practices on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Asia; the critically acclaimed parenting book, Are You Man Enough To Be a Father; couple psychology book, Love Is Never Enough, Pleasurable Commitment Rules; and Dancing with Crocodiles. His professional views on child psychology is also regularly sought and featured in national newspaper (including the parenting, women and appointment sections of the New Straits Time, the Education Section of the Star, Oriental Daily and professional and popular journals including: Malaysian Medical Tribune, Junior Statesman, Today’s Parents, Better Parents, Mama Moden, Malaysian Women Weekly, Females, Marie Claire, Nona, Jelita,
Malaysian Business, CIMA, Health & Beauty. He is also a well-known radio and television personality on psychological, relationship and family issues.
Dr. Chan is a fellow of the Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy; a fellow of the Malaysian Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Association; a practitioner member of the division of Adult Psychotherapy; the division of Couple and Marital Therapy; and the division of Child Therapy of the Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy, and a practitioner member of the Malaysian of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Association, a council member of the World Council of Psychotherapy, the chief editor of the International Journal of Psychotherapy, Counseling & Psychiatry: Theory, Research & Clinical Practice; the chair of the Asian Pacific Rim International Counseling & Psychotherapy Conference and the Chair of the World Psychotherapy Conference Asia 2015.
