Course Overview

Certification in Child Psychotherapy (endorsed by Division of Individual Psychotherapy, Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy (MAP), the Malaysian Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Association (MCBTA) and Psychotherapy Chapter of Malaysian Society for Complementary Medicine (MSCM)) leading towards practitioner membership (Division of Family Therapy), licensure of MAP, MCBTA, MSCM and World Council of Psychotherapy (WCP) Certification
What is included in the Child Psychotherapy:
– Lecture
– Tutorial
– Group Clinical supervision
– Case review and assessment

Course Layout

We use the mastery system of education. Besides lecturing, this course provides clinical experience such as: research, case study, group clinical supervision, reflections, discussions & presentation. Assessment includes case study oral and written presentations, group participation, research paper and assignments.
The topics mentioned above are taught within 3 months. During this period, students will also be given clinical case assignments and presentations to do. Our course is structured as 2 intensive workshop with 6 group clinical supervision & oral / written case presentation for the assessment. Fulfilling the attendance and passing the criteria given will lead to towards the licensed practitioner membership of Adult Psychotherapy, Geriatric Psychotherapy, Family Therapy, Couple Therapy, Child Therapy, Art Therapy and/or Expressive Therapy Divisions of Malaysia Association of Psychotherapy.

Training Topics

Children clinical symptoms covered include:
1. Anger Management
Therapy covered: Teaching the child effective communication and assertiveness skills to express anger in a controlled fashion and to meet his/her needs through more constructive actions.
2. Anxiety
Therapy covered: Conducting play therapy sessions in which the child’s anxieties, fears, and worries are explored, expressed, and resolved. Besides that, students will learn how to use an interpretive interview method in which helps the child to express motivation and feelings. Students also learn to help the client in making a connection between fears and anxieties and unexpressed or unacceptable wishes or “bad” thoughts.
3. Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Therapy covered: Identify a variety of positive reinforces or reward to maintain the child’s interest or motivation. It can also design and implement a token economy to improve the child’s academic performance, social skills, and impulse control.
4. Autism
Therapy covered: Actively building a level of trust with the client through consistent eye contact, frequent attention and interest, unconditional positive regard, and warm acceptance to facilitate increased communication. Besides that, students learn to use operant conditioning principles and response-shaping techniques to help child develop self-help skills and improving personal hygiene.
5. Conduct Disorder
Therapy covered: Encouraging and supporting the child with conduct disorder in expressing feelings associated with neglect, abuse, separation or abandonment. Students also learn how to conduct individual play therapy sessions to provide the child an opportunity to express feelings surrounding past abandonment.
6. Depression
Therapy covered: Exploring the emotional pain from the child’s past experience that contributes to the feelings of hopelessness and low self-esteem. Students also learn how to facilitate parents giving warm, positive, affirming expression of love to the depressed child.
7. Divorce Reaction
Therapy covered: Exploring, encouraging, and supporting the client in verbally expressing and clarifying his/her feelings associated with the separation or divorce. Students also learn how to empower the client by reinforcing his/her ability to cope with divorce and make health adjustment.
8. Enuresis/ Encopresis
Therapy covered: Training the child and his/her parents to treat enuresis by using behavioural therapy when involuntary wetting occurs.
9. Grief/ Loss unresolved
Therapy covered: Actively build level of trust with the child through consistent eye contact, active listening, unconditional positive regard, and warm acceptance while asking him/her to identify and express feelings associated with the loss.
10. Low self-esteem
Therapy covered: Assist child in becoming capable of identifying and verbalizing his/her emotional needs, along with ways to increase the chances of their needs being met.
11. Peer/ Sibling Conflict
Therapy covered: Creating scenarios with puppets, dolls, or stuffed animals that model and/or suggest constructive ways to handle or manage conflicts with siblings/peers.
12. School Refusal
Therapy covered: Designing and implementing a systematic desensitization program to help the client manage his/her anxiety and gradually attend school for longer periods of time.

Teaching Faculty

Dr. Chan has been conducting psychological assessment, psychotherapy and counselling for individuals, families, and corporate personnel as well as lecturing in various academic as detailed below for the past 18 years in Malaysia, Asia and Europe.
Education
Dr. Chan gained his degree in psychology with Honours from Middlesex University, U.K., his Masters degree in Learning from the Department of Educational Research at the University of Lancaster, U.K. with a Masters thesis on Educational Psychology, and his Doctorate in Psychology from the Intercultural Open University, the Netherlands. He was supervised by Professor Kim Plunkett at the Dept. of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford for his doctoral research.
Professional organizations, memberships and functions
Dr. Chan is the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Psychotherapy, Counseling & Psychiatry: Theory, Research & Clinical Practice (ISPCP-TRCP.org) Dr. Chan is a practitioner member (level 5, supervisor) and a Fellow of the Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy (MAP) and the Malaysian Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Association (MCBTA), the Malaysian representative in the World Council of Psychotherapy and a fellow of the World Council of Psychotherapy. He is the head of the Psychotherapy Chapter of the Malaysian Society for Complementary Medicine (MSCM); a full practitioner member of MSCM; and a fellow of the European Centre for Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Chan was the chair for Asia Pacific Rim International Counselling & Psychotherapy Conference 2013 and the chair for the World Psychotherapy Conference 2015 (counselingmalaysia.com).
Professional and other activities, selected publications:
Dr. Chan received postgraduate certification in Brain Based Therapy with the British Psychological Society from Professor John Arden; and Collaborative Therapy by Professor Harlene Anderson from the Houston Gavelston Institute. Dr. Chan gained his post graduate diploma in Nutritional Medicine from the Plaskett Nutritional Medicine College and Thames Valley University, U. K. where he undertook a special research interest in Psycho-Nutritional Therapy. Furthermore, Dr. Chan received postgraduate certifications training on numerous clinical disorders including psychosis and dissociative identity disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress, phobias and anxiety disorders and worked with leading psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists in the field including : Certification in Psychosis and Dissociative Identity Disorder therapy with Professor Collin Ross from the International Society for the Psychological Treatment of Schizophrenia; Certification in Anxiety Disorder with Professor David Barlow from Centre for Anxiety & Related Disorders,, University of Boston and Certification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Professor David Clarke, from the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London; post graduate diploma in Expressive Therapy for Children & Adolescents by Mark Pearson from the Institute of Expressive Therapy, Australia; Certificate in Sandtray Therapy by Prema Jansen, a student of Dora Kalff, from the Living Water Centre, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia and Certificate.
Dr. Chan also received play training by Professor Linda Homeyer, licensed play therapist and past president of the Play Therapy Association of USA in Play Therapy, Play Therapy Supervision and Filial Therapy. Dr Chan was also trained in clinical supervision in couple and family Therapy by Aldo Gurgone, licensed clinical Psychologist and Director of William Street Therapy centre, Australia.
Dr. Chan has taught in the Masters programme in Clinical Psychology at the National University of Malaysia; and for the Behavioural Science module of the MBBS degree of Medicine at the University of Malaya as well as being the course director for the Malaysian and International Psychology Centre and the Malaysian Association of Psychotherapy accredited professional certification courses in Psychotherapy.
Dr. Chan has also authored numerous books and papers, including those published in the academic proceedings and peer reviewed journals of the various international and national conferences he has been invited to speak, including, Current Research & Practices on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Asia, ed., Professor Tian P.S. Oei from the School of Psychology, University of Queensland, Australia; Love Is Never Enough, Pleasurable Commitment Rules; and Dancing with Crocodiles by Discern Publishing.
